WATERHOUSE AND SMITH
John Ellicott, Hardie Grant Books, $45The names Waterhouse and Smith havebeen a part of the Australian horseracinglandscape for many decades. And more than a few trees have perished forthe sake of another story about one or both sidesof the dynasty which finally came together whenRobbie Waterhouse, son of bookmaking king Bill, and Gai Smith, daughter of legendary trainer TJ,were married.Love them or hate them, anyone who isinterested in the sport of kings must agree thatAustralias racing industry has never been boringwhere these families are concerned. In this unauthorised biographical look at the twofamilies, Ellicott has written two separate booksin one and interwoven their stories at appropriatetimes. Some of the stories aboutthe Waterhouses include theinfamous Fine Cotton Affair, the familys famous duelswith big-spending punterslike The Babe and the lateKerry Packer and the infi ghting which causedgreat rifts between relatives. On the Smith side, there is the rise of TJ fromdirt-poor origins to become one of the worldsgreatest horse trainers and his daughter Gaisbattle to fi rstly gain a training licence and then togain acceptance in what was a male-dominatedworld.All in all, this is a pretty good account of the twofamilies and one which most racing fans will love.Greg French
