A NEWCASTLE magistrate has questioned why the Roads and Traffic Authority still issues older style log books to truck drivers despite changes to driver monitoring laws.

Elaine Truscott dismissed two offences against a Newcastle truck driver in Newcastle Local Court on Friday.

Colin John Riley, 50, miscalculated how long he was allowed to drive on March 5 by 30 minutes, his solicitor said.

The RTA had tracked him using fixed cameras throughout western NSW.

After having difficulty examining Riley's driver's log, Ms Truscott asked why the RTA still issues midnight to midnight log books despite changes to the law several years ago.

Riley pleaded guilty to driving without 10 hours' rest in a 24-hour period and working more than 14 hours in a 24-hour period.
