IT was straight back to the books for students who sat the first round of HSC exams yesterday.

The month-long series of exams began with Business Studies in the morning followed by Aboriginal Studies, Information Technology and languages in the afternoon.

There was no time for celebrations because students had to study for the English exam today.

English is the only compulsory HSC subject and will mark the start of exams for the majority of Hunter students, who sit paper one today and paper two on Monday.

About 1600 students in the Hunter sat yesterday's Business Studies paper.

Business Studies is the third most popular HSC Course with 16,401 NSW students.

For Lambton High students David Talevski, Abby Mandl and James Heydon, the Business Studies exam was not as hard as they had expected.

David said the extended response questions were a surprise while James said there was a lot of content and a lot to do.
