Boofheads

Mo Johnson

(Walker Books, $18.95)

THIS begins as broad as a sitcom: Tommo's a good bloke but a bit of a tosser, about to find out he doesn't know as much about chicks as he thinks, posing as a magazine agony aunt with best mates Ed and Casey. But Boofheads gets better as it becomes darker, with Ed's footy mates leading him into violent, masochistic territory and Casey becoming secretive and different, angered by the fallout when his brother comes out. The final scene feels like a forced reversion to jokiness but the plotting is skilful and the characters mostly ring true. Smarter than it looks.
